Barcelona’s state attorney has filed proceedings against the world-famous singer Shakira for tax evasion amounting to 14.5€ million. In 2017, The Spanish tax authorities sentthe state attorney an internal report confirming that the singer did not file income tax returns from 2011 to 2014 on the basis that she was a tax resident in another country.

The singer’s legal team have contested the application and have confirmed that the singer is up to date with the payment of any taxes due in Spain. Her legal team also confirmed that until 2015 the singer did not spend more than 183 days a year in Spain.

According to local newspapers Shakira paid 20€ million in tax and late payment penalties for 2011. The local newspapers also report that Shakira recently paid 14.5€ million on account of the tax years 2012 to 2015. However, Barcelona’s state attorney is still pursuing legal action against the singer for tax evasion.

In Spain, all tax residents must declareall their overseas assets to the tax authorities and pay taxes accordingly. If you plan to relocate to Spain you need to obtain tax advice.
